My, “Other” Source of Alignment

By: Caitlin Kissee, Director of Community Relations

Sometimes the last thing you want to do is the thing you need the most.

I always said, “I’d never do yoga.” I had the idea in my head that I would never get into yoga, because it stood for everything I wasn’t good at—being quiet, being still, being in the present moment, clearing your mind, slowing down…not to mention the thought of adding heat to a workout was my own personal hell (literally). However, last September, a friend dragged me to a hot yoga class. Now, nearly a full year later, I’m eating my words as a regular practitioner of hot yoga!

Why I Enjoy Yoga

Life BeginsWhen I started practicing yoga, I literally fell into the safe place I needed most. I found a place free from competition and comparison, a place where the emphasis is not on results, but on the process, and a retreat from the stress of life that was taking its toll on me. After just a few classes, I was hooked. From a fitness perspective, I was getting an incredible strength and cardio workout each time I stepped onto my mat. From a mental/emotional standpoint, I was learning to breathe deeply, not only on my mat, but off my mat as well.

Medical Benefits of Yoga

Taking up a regular yoga practice offered me other unexpected benefits as well. I experienced less back pain, and was in better alignment when I did get in for my regular adjustments. Dr. Loehr commented on the increased strength in my back and shoulders, which was improving my posture from the inside out. Yoga is now an integral part of my life and health, and an incredible partner to regular chiropractic care.

So, the next time you’re afraid or reluctant to try something new, step outside your comfort zone. You might just find a whole new source of alignment!
