What Is DABCI?

If you’ve been dealing with reoccurring health issues for years, we understand that it can feel like an uphill battle. Take a moment to assess your doctor’s treatment plan for you. Does it seem like he or she only addresses the symptoms and not the root cause of your illness? If you’re ready for a different approach, consider visiting a chiropractic physician who is a diplomate certified by the American Board of Chiropractic Internists (ABCI), also known as a DABCI. What is DABCI? Scroll down to learn more about this certification.

What Is DABCI?

When you see this acronym on your chiropractic physician’s list of certifications, it means he or she is able to diagnose a wide range of conditions and recommend natural treatment options. The ABCI board consists of volunteers (four to seven chiropractic internists and one public member) who coordinate and monitor testing for the diplomate boards for the chiropractic internist candidate (source).

DABCI Qualifications

In order to become DABCI-certified, a chiropractor must complete a 300-hour DABCI program. However, the DABCI training doesn’t end there. In order to maintain their certificate, diplomates must obtain 12 hours each year of continuing education. In addition, chiropractic internist diplomates must attend the CDID (Council of Diagnosis and Internal Disorders) Symposium at least once every two years. The 12-hour requirement can also be fulfilled by teaching a DABCI class for a certified program, publishing a paper, or attending one of the 26 sessions of a certified DABCI program.

Should You See a DABCI-Certified Doctor?

According to the CDID, more and more people are turning to DABCIs first when they get sick or are experiencing health issues.

DABCIs first look to holistic and natural approaches to treat the cause of the illness, while many traditional doctors often turn to prescription medication to treat the symptoms of an illness. Let’s say you’re experiencing acid reflux or heartburn. While traditional doctors might prescribe antacid medicine to stop the stomach from secreting acid, a DABCI will try to get to the bottom of why the stomach is inflamed or what caused the stomach ulcer. DABCIs try to avoid pumping the body with synthetic hormones and other prescriptions.

Some people who prefer holistic medicine often try DIY treatment methods, like changing their diet or doing yoga. These practices can be extremely beneficial components of your healing journey. However, you should first rely on someone with the training and expertise to provide you with an accurate diagnosis. A DABCI-certified doctor is a great resource for diagnostic help and can work with you to determine the best treatment plan. You can rest easy knowing that you are treating the cause of your ailment, not just the symptoms.
