Weight Management And Health Effects

It’s no secret that maintaining a healthy weight will help you look and feel better. When you weight is in a healthy range and stays in a healthy range, your body is able to experience amazing benefits like…

  • Your body has more endorphins. Endorphins make people happy. And happy people…(We’ll let you finish that movie quote 😉 )
  • Alleviating back and muscle tension
  • Controlling diabetes that is non-insulin dependent
  • Increased energy
  • Improved focus and mental clarity
  • Optimizing the immune system
  • Reduced risk of developing anemia, heart disease, diabetes, osteoarthritis, some forms of cancer, infertility, and more.

Studies have shown that even as much as a 5% reduction in body weight can yield huge results in overall health by:

  • Reducing inflammation
  • Relieving knee and hip pain
  • Reducing blood pressure
  • Improving self-esteem
  • Decreasing the risk of diabetes
  • Improving sleep
  • Providing extra energy
  • Improving sexual function
  • Reducing heartburn
  • Decreasing your risk of cancer

Gaining a pound or two a year may seem like no big deal. But when those extra pounds add up year after year, that long-term weight gain can create long-term problems.

At Loehr Health Center, our goal is to give you the tools you need in order to maintain your optimal weight, so you can prevent or manage chronic disease and feel like your healthiest self.

Here’s the bottom line. The key to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight isn’t about short-term dietary changes. Weight management is about an ongoing, healthy lifestyle that includes long-term changes in your eating and exercise habits. Getting to and maintaining the best weight for your body type isn’t always easy, and it takes commitment. Whatever your weight management needs, the staff at Loehr Health Center is here to provide you with the encouragement and support you need to crush your goals and feel your best.

What approaches do your practitioners offer for weight management?

At Loehr Health Center you have a unique option of approaching your weight from a holistic nutrition coaching variety of standpoints, including:

How does a functional medicine doctor help me improve my weight?

Some foods get a lot of hype for being healthy, but that doesn’t mean that they are healthy for YOU. #kaleyeah

Our functional medicine doctor uses lab work and diagnostic testing to detect health issues and find drug-free solutions to help you improve your nutrition and lifestyle.
Your treatment plan and recommendations received will vary based on the lab test results and your personalized plan.

For example, patients that take a Food Sensitivity Test may receive the following tools and recommendations to improve their overall nutrition:

  • Food sensitivity results with a list of which foods you are most sensitive to
  • Food plan
  • Menu ideas
  • Shopping list

Eating foods you are sensitive to may result in increased inflammation, weight gain, and a whole host of health problems. By eliminating or decreasing those foods, many patients lose weight.

How does a Traditional Chinese Medicine provider help me improve my nutrition?

We offer our patients a variety of eastern medicine options including options, including:

When it comes to weight management, Traditional Chinese Medicine takes a slightly different approach than traditional Western medicine. In TCM, food is considered both nutrients for the body and medicine for the purpose of achieving harmony and balance within the body. This practice has developed over thousands of years and is based on empirical evidence.   The foods and supplements recommended by your Traditional Chinese Medicine specialist will be based on your TCM exam, consult, and health history.

Similarly to a Functional Medicine physician, a TCM practitioner will recommend foods and supplements to improve your health. By fueling your body with foods that are specifically recommended for you, it is common for patients to maintain a healthy weight and manage their health.

Acupuncture may also assist patients in their weight management journey by

  • Improving their digestion
  • Reducing their stress
  • Boosting their metabolism

How does a Primary Care Physician help me reach my weight goal?

Our Primary Care Physician is a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) that brings a blend of traditional, western, medicine and a natural approach to your health.

DOs are able to help you with your weight loss goals by:

  • Discussing your food choices, exercises, and options
  • Running laboratory tests
  • Prescribing medication, if needed

How does a Counselor help me with weight management?

Our emotions play a big part of our relationship with food, exercise, and our health.

At Loehr Health Center we have a licensed professional counselor who is certified in both EMDR Therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy) and Polyvagal Therapy. Our licensed professional counselor can help you get to the bottom of potential emotional struggles or habits that may be affecting you from achieving your optimal wellness.

And, each of these practitioners can refer you to another if they feel a more varied treatment path would enhance your nutrition and lifestyle goals.

Your first weight management appointment experience will vary based on the type of provider you schedule with. Regardless of which provider you meet with,  your provider will go over your complete health history, including your lifestyle, exercise, and diet choices.

Many patients choose to take the functional medicine approach to weight management. Patients seeing our Functional Medicine Physician will also complete a Bio-electrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) and review the results with the doctor during the first appointment.  During this appointment, some patients may be recommended to visit our in-house lab for the Wellness Panel exclusively offered at Loehr Health. The Wellness Panel is a comprehensive blood panel and can identify potential problems such as:

  • Anemia
  • Infection
  • Hardening of the arteries
  • Coronary heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Blood clotting issues
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease
  • Circulatory disorders
  • Stroke
  • Adrenal fatigue
  • Hypo and Hyperthyroidism

Custom-formulated by our functional medicine physician, the Wellness Panel provides you with a complete picture of what’s happening inside your body and is the first step to determining the best course of action to help you reach your weight goals. Depending on what is going on with your health,  your doctor may also recommend a food sensitivity test in order to discover if there are any specific foods that might be making your weight management journey difficult.

Once your Wellness Panel (or other recommended lab work) results are in, your doctor will create a customized nutrition plan for you to follow that will include a specific calorie count and food portion size depending on your metabolic rate. Your doctor will provide you with a list of which foods work for your body, as well as the ones you will want to avoid. You’ll also discover any underlying hormonal, metabolic or other factors that may be relevant to your weight management journey, such as:

  • Chronic inflammation
  • Poor thyroid function
  • Blood sugar imbalance
  • Food allergies or food sensitivities
  • Digestion problems
  • Slow metabolism
  • Stress
  • Hormone imbalance
  • Adrenal stress

In addition to providing you with a personalized eating plan, your doctor will take the time to outline safe ways to help manage your weight including:

  • The use of nutritional supplements
  • Reducing and managing stress
  • Getting optimal sleep
  • Maintaining healthy eating habits
  • Engaging in regular physical activity
  • Care will continue with follow-up appointments to check your progress and troubleshoot any issues you may be having along the way.

Whether you need a weight loss diet plan or a weight gain diet plan, you’re sure to receive the tools you need to meet your weight management goals.

Bio-electrical Impedance Analysis or BIA is a non-invasive way to assess your body composition.  The BIA machine scans your body’s demographics to show the fat to lean mass ratio, or Body Mass Index (BMI). It is a quick and pain-free.

Bioelectric-impedance Analysis (BIA) is a non-invasive test that takes just five to ten minutes. The BIA is painless and is done right here in our office. During the test, two electrodes will be placed on your right hand and right foot. A low-level electrical current will then be sent throughout your body. The current will measure the resistance to the flow at different frequencies against the different types of tissues in your body. Tissues with large amounts of fluid and electrolytes, such as blood, have a high conductivity. But fat and bone cause the signal to slow down. BIA tests provide an estimate of body water from which body fat is calculated by using a specialized algorithm.

Most people focus solely on the scale when it comes to weight loss. But, did you know that an altered body composition is known to increase your risk for a variety of diseases? A normal balance of body fat in relation to lean body mass is associated with good health and longevity. On the other hand, an unhealthy body composition with excess fat can greatly increase the risk of:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Diabetes
  • High Cholesterol
  • High Glucose Levels
  • Excess Insulin
  • Hormone Imbalance
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Cancer

BIA gives allows early detection of any imbalance in body composition and allow for early intervention as well as prevention.

BIA is safe and painless for both children and adults. However, BIA shouldn’t be used by pregnant women or anyone with an electronic medical implant.
